Making Work by Karla Boos | HowlRound

Categories:

City Series

Maybe I should say who I am? Karla Boos, Artistic Director of Quantum Theatre in Pittsburgh, which I founded over twenty years ago. We make experimental work, original pieces and plays from around the world, some re-envisioned classic plays and unusual operas. One of the ways we experiment is with environment; we stage them all environmentally in unusual places.

I really loved how thoughtfully Tammy spoke as a Pittsburgher. We are all that, and I?m sure all the responders will feel as I do, that we join in answering the question of what this means because we care about our town. We?re moved by its complicated connections and layers, and we?re proud of its fairly amazing artistic profile and accomplishments, in our art form and in all the arts. As artists, we feel that our accomplishments are connected somehow to the character of the city itself, the relationships that come from its many layers. At least I do, since my work depends on a super-adventurous audience, people who go to a play not having a clue what might happen, and our productions are inspired in some ways by the physical city. So it?s good to note that a problem exists. I care that local playwrights don?t have ongoing, natural ways to develop. This is not only a problem of funding (because that does exist to the degree that funders are trying hard to create opportunities for individual artists of all media) but also due to a lack of local theaters willing to produce local playwrights.

Tammy, in her article, did not suggest as a solution the creation of a theater (or more than one) whose mission was to produce new plays by local playwrights. Do you wish that existed? In a recent article about the Bricolage and Pittsburgh Playwrights collaboration to produce Dutchman; Justin Laing of the Heinz Endowments comments that Dutchman is old and its sentiments tired (maybe this good man didn?t exactly say that? Maybe he said ?already expressed? or something like that?). But I?m sure I heard him say words to the effect of, why are we reflecting LeRoi Jones? fifty-year-old thoughts, where?s the contemporary play, that comes from within our community, and addresses the ongoing issues of race in Pittsburgh that Tammy points to?and I?d add is brilliant, and might endure like Dutchman?

So? a theater dedicated to the development and evolution of playwrights? I?ll play devil?s advocate to my own suggestion. Theaters are dedicated to making great theater, aren?t they?however they define that? One hasn?t arisen that thinks it will make great theater in an ongoing, sustainable way solely from producing, nurturing, and developing the writing of local playwrights. There also hasn?t been a professional theater dedicated to having local professional actors on its boards. Every professional theater does have local actors on its boards?what could be better?? But no one?s dedicated to that, only to making great theater?and sometimes that can be accomplished with local artists and sometimes it can?t. Same with directors, designers, and every kind of artist in our collaborative art form.

Tammy didn?t say she wished that a theater existed for that sole purpose. She said that she wished theaters would take on a nurturing role with a local playwright who interests them. She?s right, I?d say, but would also just warn that I think there?s something that comes before all else: we should all believe that we?re making the greatest piece of work of our lives every single time we ask an audience to spend two hours with us. Though I feel shy to reveal these things, I not only need to feel that, I?ll further say that I, personally, need to feel like I?m dealing with a new language every time, that I?ve never heard this particular language before, I don?t understand it necessarily, it?s moving me; in its unknown quality it?s providing me with new meanings, and I need to replicate my own process of discovery of its meaning in the two hours? traffic the audience will experience. My purpose is to give the audience its own, speeded up?edited, I guess?discovery of new meaning.

So I already have quite a tall order for myself, as a person who runs a theater that does four works per year?too many, probably, for such a tall order. My theater can?t take on a different mission. But I could, definitely, feel that my collaboration is with writers as it is with directors, performers, and designers. But I?ve found that writers in the American theater think of themselves apart, think of their writing existing as a totality in itself?I think this even though Tammy has articulated the value of the collaboration from a playwright?s perspective (and it could be my limited experience, I know less about American writers). When I said ?language,? did you understand that I meant an entire continuum of communication, so much more than words on a page, words in the mouths of characters?

Maybe I haven?t felt like my trip?discovering the new language, finding meaning in the environment and what it yields for the ensemble, is something to impose on a writer? I feel shy to even go there with writers because they seem like such self-sufficient entities in their rooms with their imaginations and their desks. Maybe writers should understand other theater artists better?where Artistic Directors are coming from and where directors and ensembles of performers are coming from. Maybe the play on a page as the point of departure is not the only way. I do think I?m speaking from limited experience, for all my twenty plus years, that writers no doubt yearn to be better-understood by me and my kind too, and Tammy?s point is they want to come to the party, so to speak.

There?s my Howl. It?s meant to provoke, like my theater. I have the greatest respect for anyone trying to make work from a personal point of view, and wish it was easier for all of us.

Recent major airplane crashes in Nigeria

A look at recent major airline crashes in Nigeria:

?June 3: A Dana Air flight from Abuja to Lagos crashes killing all 153 people on board and an unknown number of people on the ground. Investigators have begun looking into the cause.

?Oct. 29, 2006: An Aviation Development Co. flight from Abuja to Sokoto crashes, killing 96 people, including the top spiritual leader for the nation's Muslims. The plane crashed 76 seconds after going airborne. An investigative report found that just before the crash alarms began sounding in the cockpit and that the pilots' incorrect actions stalled the plane. The report read: "Although bad weather may have created the situation, which the pilots reacted to, they reacted inappropriately."

?Dec. 10, 2005: A Sosoliso Airlines flight full of schoolchildren flying from Abuja to Port Harcourt crashes, killing 107 people. A U.S. Federal Aviation Administration report later says the pilot was "reportedly racing a thunderstorm" nearing the airport. The report said inclement weather also forced the pilot to make an instrument landing ? meaning that visibility had been reduced to the point the pilot needed to rely on instruments to make his landing.

?Oct. 22, 2005: A Bellview Airlines flight crashes, killing 117 people, including a U.S. citizen, after nose-diving into the ground at high speed. An investigative report later said the plane's captain, a 49-year-old former pilot, had been hired by Bellview after he had been working at a dairy for about 14 years. The report said the pilot also had been "shot in the head during a robbery attempt" during that break from flying.

?May 4, 2002: An EAS airliner with 77 people aboard crashes into a bustling working-class neighborhood in the northern city of Kano just after takeoff. Only four people aboard survived the crash, which killed dozens more on the ground. In total, at least 149 people were killed.

?Sept. 27, 1992: A military transport plane crashes into a swamp shortly after takeoff from Lagos. All 163 army soldiers, relatives and crew members on board were killed.

Mosquitos Have Little Trouble Flying in the Rain

sciencehabit writes with an interesting article about the (surprisingly not well studied) effects of rain on flying insects. From the article: "When a raindrop hits a mosquito, it's the equivalent of one of us being slammed into by a bus. And yet the bug will survive and keep flying. That's the conclusion of a team of engineers and biologists, which used a combination of real-time video and sophisticated math to demonstrate that the light insect's rugged construction allows the mosquito to shrug off the onslaught of even the largest raindrop. The findings offer little aid in controlling the pest but could help engineers improve the design of tiny flying robots." Bats, unfortunately, aren't so lucky: "...these furry fliers need about twice as much energy to power through the rain compared with dry conditions."

Automotive Air Conditioning is built to remove undesired ?heat ? from inside, dehumidify the cabin atmosphere and supply cool air for the comfort of the occupants.

Every air-conditioning system works by taking the heat from the cabin air to heat and vaporize the refrigerant liquid like Freon. The liquid is pressurised by the compressor and although it takes the heat from the air it burns in the enlargement valve and the ?hot ? gas is circulated thru a series of tubes to diffuse the heat and in the procedure the Freon gets cold.

By now it is clear that the most vital component, in the rather complicated layout verbally listed above, is the compressor which is similar to the heart in your body and the Freon is like blood. Initially cold Freon is passed through metal tubing to the dash area in your vehicle to the ?evaporator zone?.

This where the heat needs to be removed from and has an ?evaporator core ? resembling a miniature radiator with thin tubes and metal fins, the only difference being there is no coolant or anti-freeze and this is cold not like the radiator which is always hot.

A small fan or blower, which is controlled for its speed and volume of air delivery from your cabin, fitted behind the evaporator blows the air thru the evaporator grills and into your cabin. Freon absorbs the heat from the cabin with the help of the ?condenser ? fitted in the front next to the radiator.

Freon circulating back from the cabin carries the heat thru rubber and metal tubes and the condenser has coils of aluminium and Freon is forced through fine slits while the electrical cooling fan mounted in front or behind the condenser removes the heat. The cycle is repeated continuously so the atmosphere in the cabin remains cool.

After having been familiarized with how your automobile air conditioner works and what its major parts are, it?ll be interesting to see what all presumably could go bad and the way to remedy them. Some of the most typical of such issues include:

? Low or total absence of air flow across the condenser- this should be due to issues with the electric cooling fan. Check to confirm if this is turning (in models with fan blades detectable) or if undecided you should call your engineer
? Low Freon level ? this could be doubted if the cooling potency is low i.e, even with the car AC entirely ON there is very little cooling within. That issue could only be attended by a licensed AC technician.
? AC is working in full , but cooling is poor and engine is overheating ?this happens in models where there are no separate fans for condenser and radiator, which shares a common huge fan or engine is overheating due to other Problems and cuts down the condenser efficiency. In all cases reach for the phone and call your garage, before you?ve got more serious problems with your automobile.
? If the air conditioner doesn?t begin at all check and confirm that there is blown fuse or the switch isn?t disconnected while cleaning and so on. Electric connections can be often the offender, which can on occasion be found out with a little experience.
? If your car needs a complete change or replacement of major components like compressor, get it from the OEM and check the refrigerant is the proper one. (R12 is being PHASED OUT)

It should be borne in mind the refrigerant which in older models is R-12, substance renowned for its detrimental impact on the environment due to ?ozone layer depletion?. Additionally, the substance is responsible to cause injury to your skin and eyes if you try and interfere with the automobile aircon system and coincidentally lets it leak. In short automobile air conditioners have little ?user serviceable ? parts or parts and require the help of a qualified and certified engineer.

Whenever low Freon level is suspected or low cooling is felt in spite of the rest allegedly fine, do not refrain from seeking pro help from qualified personnel. It may be opportune to mention here that old models of vehicles using R12 as the refrigerant has only up to 2013 to continue to replenish the banned substance.

No new cars are able to use R12, but has to change to R134A or similar environmentally safe refrigerants as per the Montreal Custom and directives by the EPA. Some vehicle makers have recently started selling retro-fit kits and if or when your auto wishes servicing or repairing of AC, check if you are still using R12 or any other illegal substance and change over to approved refrigerants A.S.A.P.

My Elegant Gathering of White Snows: Shocking Event: Dominic ...

Dominic Monaghan appears to have forgotten that Hollywood approves of domestic violence and violence against women in general. Instead of offering Matthew Fox an Academy Award like Roman Polanski or a standing ovation like Chris Brown, Monaghan called Fox out on serial domestic violence. I mean, even Fox News has noticed and they are hardly on the forefront of anything that's not racist or misogynistic or homophobic or disablist. Reece Witherspoon, Christina Aguilera and Patrick Stewart? have all spoken publicly on the issue but Hollywood doesn't seem to be listening. Disney's Beauty and the Beast remains one of their "most-loved" films despite clearly being a case of Stockholm syndrome complete with tap-dancing kettle and lecherous candlestick. Belle passes up the local abusive village man for the rich abusive man with a castle. That's not exactly a feminist position. It's certainly not a choice I would want for my daughters.?

Frothy Dragon wrote eloquently here about the relationship between Jeremy Kyle, domestic violence and reality television. Making domestic violence the subject of reality television is truly despicable women-hating. The Entertainment Industry, in general, seems rooted in reinforcing and perpetuating domestic violence as "sexy" and "edgy" [and this is without discussing Twilight: A Guide to Finding Dangerous Relationships for Teenagers]. We wonder why the domestic violence rate is so high and, yet, surround teenagers with images of "romantic" stalkers and "bad boys". These images are dangerous and nasty.

So, whilst, this seems ridiculous thing to have to do, I'd like to give recognition to a man standing up against domestic violence [even if I think the Eminem video Monaghan starred in last year fetishised DV].

Here's hoping more male celebrities get off their asses and start standing up for women instead of celebrating the men who abuse them like:

Mike Tyson: rapist and domestic violence
Roman Polanski: child rapist
Chris Brown: domestic violence
Charlie Sheen: domestic violence and abuse of prostitutes
James Brown: domestic violence
Hugh Grant: abusing a prostitute
Ched Evans: rapist
Sean Connery: domestic violence
Ike Turner: domestic violence
Mel Gibson: probation for domestic violence [not to mention the issue of racism]
Harry Morgan: domestic violence
Tupac Shakur: sexual abuse
Richard Hatch: domestic assault
Anthony Kiedis: indecent exposure and sexual battery
Flea: battery
Chad Smith: battery
Tracy Lawrence: domestic abuse
Dennis Rodman: domestic abuse
Mickey Rourke: domestic abuse
Sean Penn: domestic abuse
Paul Gascoigne: domestic violence
Stan Collymore: domestic violence
Bill Wyman: for being a child rapist even if never convicted of it.
R. Kelly: domestic abuse [amongst some other horrifying accusations]
Micheal Lohan: domestic violence
Larry Fitzgerald: restraining order for domestic violence
Santonia Holmes: multiple arrests for domestic violence
Tommy Lee: domestic violence
Alec Baldwin: emotional abuse
Steven Tyler: inappropriate relationship with a minor [which should have resulted in statuatory rape charges like Wyman]

This list is just from a 10 minute search on google.?

And, yeah, I've included purchasing women for sexual purposes as violence against women because it is; as is pornography.

How To Grow The Tastiest Tomato? One Secret's In The Soil

iStockphoto.com

A tomato expert recommends planting seedlings in rich soil with lots of organic matter and a steady slow-release fertilizer.

It's tomato time here in the mid-Atlantic ? the critical moment when those of us eager to pull fat, bright fruit off our own backyard vines in a couple months are scurrying to get tender little plants in the ground.

But as anyone who's spent a few summers of kneeling in the dirt can tell you, healthy-looking vines will not necessarily get you a mind-blowingly delicious tomato. And why?

Well, it turns out that scientists still don't know exactly what growing conditions are responsible for the supertasty tomato. But they have a few inklings, which are worth keeping in mind as you try to coax sweetness and tartness from your seedlings.

?

One scientist who's hot on the trail of what makes a fresh tomato shimmer in your mouth is Harold Klee at the University of Florida. Klee's inspiration to map real tomato flavor began with those pale waxy supermarket tomatoes. You know the ones ? they've been bred to travel well and resist pests, but they sure need some help in the flavor department.

According to Klee, good tomato flavor is a complex panorama of sugars, acids, and mysterious gassy chemicals that we experience as smell. Klee and his colleagues are still identifying those "aroma volatiles," and have pinpointed more than 3,000 of them across more than 152 varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

In a paper published last month in Current Biology, Klee says that some of those chemicals can make a tomato taste sweet even though they have nothing to do with sugar.

But he says where and how you grow a plant does influence how it tastes. And gardeners can take heart that access to a greenhouse doesn't mean much when it comes to flavor. "We have always felt that our fruits from the greenhouse, where they are essentially hydroponic, aren't nearly as tasty as those from the field harvested at the same time," Klee told The Salt in an email.

That's probably because the greenhouse tomatoes don't get as much UV light as tomatoes in the field. Which means that the more direct sun you can give your tomatoes the better ? and in particular, sweeter ? they'll taste.

Too much water can also dilute the flavor. "We know that if you harvest fruit from a plant and then it rains a lot and you go back to the same plant the next day, the fruit tastes less flavorful," says Klee. How much and how often you water depends on how much rain you're getting, but most experts recommend watering two to three times a week in the hottest part of the summer.

Tomato growers in Israel's Negev desert region attribute the sweetness in their fruit to the brackish water they use to hydrate plants. Agricultural extension specialists in New Jersey report that an experiment there using seawater on tomatoes also yielded better flavor.

Just as important, says Klee, is the soil. He recommends planting seedlings in rich soil with lots of organic matter, or compost. And you can add a steady slow-release fertilizer (like Osmocote).

But don't think that a tomato that grows well and tastes like a dream in one place will necessarily thrive somewhere else. That's what author Arthur Allen learned when he tried to plant a tomato he found in California, the Speckled Peach, on the East Coast. The fruit's flavor 3,000 miles away was just mediocre, Allen told NPR.

For expert advice on which tomato breeds are best suited to your backyard, consult your local agricultural extension office.

BOSTONA novel compound has become the first targeted therapy to benefit patients with the most common genetic subtype of lung cancer, an international clinical trial led by scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other institutions will report at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) June 1-5 in Chicago.

Pasi A. Jnne, MD, PhD, scientific co-director of Dana-Farber's Belfer Institute for Applied Cancer Science, will present the findings from the randomized phase II study (abstract 7503) on Monday, June 4, 3 p.m. CT, E Hall D2, McCormick Place.

The study involved 87 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients whose tumors carry a mutation in the gene KRAS. Such tumors account for about 20 percent of NSCLC cases, but no targeted therapy has proved effective against them in previous clinical research. The drug under investigation, selumetinib, doesn't attack KRAS directly, but interferes with one of its molecular henchmen, a protein called MEK.

Participants in the study all had advanced stages of the disease. They received the standard chemotherapy agent docetaxel in combination with either selumetinib or a placebo.

By many measures the rate and duration of response to treatment, change in tumor size, and proportion of patients alive and showing no signs of advancing disease -- the group receiving selumetinib did significantly better than the other group. Most clinically significant were the improved rate of response to treatment (37 percent compared to 0 percent in the placebo arm) and prolonged progression-free survival (5.3 months compared to 2.1 months in the placebo arm). Although patients in the selumetinib group survived longer, on average, than those in the placebo group 9.4 months compared to 5.2 months the improvement was not considered statistically significant.

"This clinical trial demonstrates that a combination of chemotherapy and selumetinib is significantly better than chemotherapy alone for this group of patients better in terms of tumor response to therapy and in terms of survival times prior to advance of the disease," says Jnne. "It suggests that for the first time we may have an effective treatment for KRAS-mutant lung cancer, which is the largest single subtype of the disease. These impressive clinical findings not only have implications for the treatment of lung cancer but all cancers that harbor KRAS mutations, including pancreatic and colorectal cancer."

Some side effects, such as neutropenia (a white blood cell deficiency), loss of strength, acne, and respiratory problems were more common in the selumetinib group than the other, but the rate of patients dropping out of the study because of severe side effects was similar for both groups.
