First families of Hillsborough County football

Thu. August 30, 2012 |

For all of Hillsborough County?s transplants and commuters, it remains a bedrock of Friday night family tradition. To this day, local rosters remain dotted with last names that have become synonymous with some schools, and each program seems fastened by at least one distinct family tie. Probe hard enough, and you?re bound to find the county?s most disparate areas (like Citrus Park and Seffner) are divided by mere degrees of separation. In that spirit, we?ve assembled a hodgepodge of assorted family matters for your preseason perusal. Enjoy.

First families

The county?s top five football families (We?re only talking immediate families here because, well, this list gets way too unwieldy if you toss in cousins, uncles, etc.)

The Baileys
Dalvin (Armwood, 2000-01)
Kalvin (Armwood, 2001-04)
Alvin (Armwood, 2009-present)
Talvin (Armwood, 2011-present)

For sheer volume, in terms of siblings and state titles, no one can touch LaFonda Bailey?s boys. Kalvin, of course, was the burly cornerstone of the Hawks? triple-option running attack that steamrolled its way to a pair of state titles. Alvin turned in one clutch playoff effort after another last year to will Armwood to the Class 6A crown (which it later had to forfeit). Dalvin, the eldest, was a flashy cornerback/receiver in his day. And Talvin? Well, the two older brothers agree he ultimately may be the best in the family.

The Caldwells
Reche (Jefferson, 1994-97)
Andre (Jefferson,
1999-2002)

If not for their birth certificates, one might presume these two are twins. Both played quarterback for the Dragons out of necessity before evolving into dazzling receivers at the University of Florida and ultimately reaching the NFL. As a Dragons senior, Reche collected more than 3,600 yards and led Jefferson to the Class 5A state semifinals. Five falls later, ?Bubba? amassed more than 2,500 yards, leading the Dragons to the 4A title game.

The McQuays
Leon (Blake, 1965-67)
Leon Jr. (King, 1985-87)
Khiry (Hillsborough 2006-08, Armwood 2009)
Leon III (Armwood,
2009-present)

The elder McQuay would go on to a legendary University of Tampa career and later bounce around the NFL ? where Leon III just might land one day. Currently, he?s the nation?s 40th-ranked senior prospect according to ESPN. Leon Jr. was a versatile all-Western Conference performer for King in the Cosby Show era, and Khiry starred for Armwood?s 12-1 team in 2009 after transferring from Hillsborough.

The Godseys
Greg (Jesuit 1986-89)
George (Jesuit, 1993-96)
Gary (Jesuit, 1995-98)

Greg won a Golden Helmet Award as a Tigers guard, while George threw for more than 3,700? yards and led Jesuit to a pair of district titles. Gary, a 6-foot-8 force of nature, played on both lines before ultimately settling in at quarterback, where he earned the Guy Toph Award as a senior. All three would go on to play Division I football.

The Smiths
Shawn (Tampa Bay Tech, 1985-86)
Eric (Armwood, 2005-07)
Petey (Armwood, 2005-08)

Shawn?s boys win the body-of-work debate in this family. Eric (a downhill tailback) and Petey (a head-stalking linebacker) carved out prep careers that would lead to abbreviated stints at Auburn and Alabama, respectively. But in terms of single-game glory, neither can touch their old man. Shawn, a 195-pound tailback in the day, ran for 501 yards -- still a state record -- in a 1985 win against East Bay.

The next generation
Area?s top players with ?Jr.? or ?III? after their name
Richard Bisaccia Jr.
LB, Freedom
Son of former longtime Bucs assistant

Zain Gilmore Jr.
QB, Robinson
Prolific QB is son of 1998 Florida Mr. Football

Vernon Hargreaves III
CB, Wharton
Arguably nation?s top college CB prospect

Kim Jackson II
TE, King
Dad played in same Lions backfield with Leon McQuay Jr.

Leon McQuay III
S, Armwood
Has potential to be second family member to reach NFL

Next of kin
Other local family connections we?ve discovered

? Two of the county?s most prolific tailbacks, Carrollwood Day?s Robert Davis and Chamberlain?s Xavier Johnson, are first cousins.

?? Sickles OT Zach Hudson is the nephew of Gryphons coach Brian Turner and grandson of all-time county coaching victories leader Billy Turner.

? Seven Plant players ? Aaron Aikens, Will Few, Harrison Mathews, Bernard Rogers, Reeves Rogers, Zach Seaberg and Cameron Staley ? are the younger brothers of former Panthers.

? Durant FB Jamarlon Hamilton is the nephew of former L.A. Raiders and Dallas Cowboys RB Derrick Gainer.

Paris Hilton: Topless in GQ Russia!

Paris Hilton is still alive! And posing with no top for the men of Russia!

Fashion maven Ellen Von Unwerth snapped a spread for that nation's edition of GQ, with the once-ubiquitous, now largely-irrelevant Hilton in all her trashy glory. And sometimes lingerie. Good times all around in Russia right now.

Check out a couple of HOT (or not) Paris Hilton pics:

Paris Hilton ToplessSexy Paris Hilton

As for what Paris is up to since being displaced by Kim Kardashian as the queen of being famous for nothing, she's DJing, working on an album and stuff.

Beyond that, who honestly knows anymore.

If nothing else, girl looks great at 31. With the 10-year anniversary of the Paris Hilton sex tape coming up, she's gotta keep that body toned and tight.

Paris is totes still worthy of a drunk text.

Tea in England | Fancy a Cuppa? book review

Tea Room Sign

Do you love tearooms? I love tearooms. I used to have a dream of opening a tearoom, but my research revealed that tearoom owners don?t just sit around all day with their customers drinking tea, but that they actually work very, very, very hard. (It was a nice thought, anyway.)

The first tearoom in England opened in 1706. Though no longer a tearoom, tea is still sold there: Twinings, 216 Strand, London. Twinings Tea remains a family-run business, and they hold a Royal Warrant, meaning they supply goods to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. RoyalTEA, I suppose.

I have no idea how many tearooms there are in England (the term ?a lot? springs to mind), but for tea enthusiasts like me, the dilemma is usually: How do you know where to find a good tearoom when you fancy a cuppa?

Fortunately, Simon Duffin and Anita Volkert have already done the leg work and provided some answers. Their book, Fancy a Cuppa, lists 50 great places across the UK for tea* and cake ? each with a story to tell.

?

Fancy a Cuppa book cover

?

Fancy a Cuppa is not a ?Top 50? collection of one individual?s favourite places for tea; I mean, face it ? we could all write a book like that. Instead, Fancy a Cuppa shares with its readers 50 places for tea in the UK that meet the following criteria:

1. Serves really good food and drink.

2. Located in a beautiful and/or historic location.

3. Has a story to tell, either about the history of the building itself or the philosophy and approach of the owners.

Now that is a tearoom guide worth reading!

?

First things first

?
At the front of the book, the Nifty Fifty are listed geographically, each with a brief 3-4 sentence ?teaser? of its unique quality. These descriptions are just enough to whet your appetite, leading you to delve further into the book. Here?s an example:

Arundal

Fancy a cuppa in this 16th century barn where tea has been served since the 1920s? -? a stone?s-throw from the picture-book medieval castle? The scones here are something special, and they let you choose whether it?s whipped or clotted cream?

?

He said. She said.

?
The tearooms are then listed by theme ? Best overall experience? Best story? Best cakes? Best view? Best building? etc etc etc ? with Simon sharing his choice, followed by Anita sharing hers. (Guess what? They don?t usually agree.) This is my favourite part of the book! It?s like being in a tearoom, eavesdropping on the conversation of the couple sat next to you. (Not that I ever do things like that.) *cough*

?

The rest of the story

?
The remaining hundred or so pages cover each tearoom entry in detail from the particulars (address, open hours, directions ? even parking tips) to the fascinating tales behind the owners, the building, and the setting. Colour photographs add to the enjoyment.

Apart from the engaging stories about owners and buildings, I was impressed with the number of tearoom owners who strive to locally source as much of their food as possible, and who offer home-baked cakes and bread. These are places worth supporting.

If you don?t have a particular need for the name of a good tearoom, or even if you don?t live in the UK, Fancy a Cuppa is still a worthwhile read. Like history? Learn about tearooms located in a former 15th c Tudor house, 16th c barn, and 18th c pub.? Foodie? Delight in distinctive menu offerings some tearooms provide: Lardy Cake, Pilchards on Toast, Maids of Honour, Molly Cake, and Yorkshire Parkin.

?

Endorsement

?
I have read dozens of tearoom guides over the years, but Fancy a Cuppa takes the cake. (Get it? ?Takes the cake.? Cake. Tea. You know, tea and cake. Right, forget it.) Seriously, I highly recommend?Fancy a Cuppa by Simon Duffin and Anita Volkert. It?s an excellent resource for tea lovers, day trippers, tourists ? or anyone searching for a decent cup of tea with a twist.

Be sure to visit the Fancy a Cuppa website where you can read more about the tearooms featured in this book.? Additionally, a new book covering tearooms in 80 UK Cathedral towns and cities is in the works. (There is also a Fancy a Cuppa US book.) Find Fancy a Cuppa tearoom tweets here: @FancyaCuppaNow

?

?

*Fancy a Cuppa books also include recommendations for a good Cup of Joe (coffee).

Why world markets focus on tiny Jackson Hole, Wyo.

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. (AP) ? Every August, the world's financial markets shift their attention from the centers of global commerce ? New York, London, Tokyo ? to a mountain valley in northwest Wyoming. On Friday, they will hear a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

So how did Jackson Hole, Wyo., come to wield such outsize importance in global economic affairs?

In a word, trout.

For four years starting in 1978, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City hosted an annual conference at different sites and different times of year. The event drew little attention outside the insular world of economic analysts.

Inspired by a conference the Boston Fed held near a picturesque New Hampshire site where the tearjerker "On Golden Pond" was filmed, the Kansas City Fed held its 1981 conference in scenic Vail, Colo.

Still no luck. The Vail meeting drew the conference's smallest crowd ever.

Officials at the bank pondered how to draw bigger names and more attention to the yearly confab. That's when they set their sights on Paul Volcker, then chairman of the Federal Reserve in Washington.

They decided to pursue Volcker by dangling the prospect of one of his favorite pastimes: fly-fishing. They needed to find a sure-fire trout-catching spot somewhere in the Kansas City Fed district, which covers Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming, as well as northern New Mexico and western Missouri.

They considered somewhere in Colorado. But a fly-fishing expert said Colorado's waters were too warm for trout in August. Go farther north, he said. Go to Jackson Hole.

"I'd never heard of it," confessed Tom Davis, then the Kansas City Fed's research director and point man on the project, according to the bank's official history of the event.

The shift was made. And what's been known since 1982 as the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium took its place in economic lore.

Jackson Hole isn't even a town. It's a valley. The biggest town, Jackson (population 9,710), lies at the southern end of Jackson Hole. Arches made of elk antlers mark the entrance to the town square. The Fed conference itself occurs farther north, in a lodge in Grand Teton National Park, about 50 miles south of Yellowstone National Park.

The event now draws 140 people every year, including some of the biggest names in economic and finance. They come to enjoy breathtaking views of the Grand Teton mountain range and Jackson Lake, to hike and fish and to engage in intellectual combat in the halls of the Jackson Lake Lodge.

"Jackson Hole provides a nice opportunity for central bankers to let down their hair a bit ? only figuratively speaking, of course ? and mingle with other members of their tribe and a few academics in an informal setting," says Eswar Prasad, a Cornell University professor who will speak on a Jackson Hole panel this year.

One annual tradition is the Friday night barbecue. There, some of the world's most high-powered economists don cowboy hats, string ties and other Western gear and sometimes join in a line dance.

At each year's Jackson Hole conference, the Fed chairman is a focal point. The head of the European Central Bank normally is, too. (This year is an exception. The current ECB chief, Mario Draghi, who is fighting Europe's debt crisis, canceled plans to attend.)

In the final days of the Soviet Union in 1990, central bankers and economists from the former Eastern bloc came to Jackson Hole to learn how to manage post-Communist economies.

Not everything went well. The Soviet delegation had mistakenly checked the weather for steamy Jackson, Miss. The Soviet officials "almost froze" in Jackson Hole's brisk mountain air, recalled Roger Guffey, then Kansas City Fed president, according to the bank's history.

The proceedings can become contentious. At the first Jackson Hole conference, in fact, Volcker himself came under fire for his drive to shrink inflation by pushing up interest rates into double digits and allowing the U.S. economy to sink deep into recession.

A University of Chicago economist named Raghuram Rajan ruined the mood in 2005 at what was shaping up as a fawning farewell to the outgoing Fed chairman, Alan Greenspan. Rajan warned that the financial system had absorbed dangerous risks under Greenspan's watch.

Participants turned against Rajan. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers assailed him, calling his premise "misguided." Three years later, the world learned to its horror, as a meltdown of subprime mortgages started causing big banks to topple, that Rajan had been correct after all.

Investors started focusing especially intensely on Jackson Hole after Bernanke used his remarks there in 2010 to lay out the Fed's policy options. Among the options he mentioned was a second round of bond purchases, to pump cash into the financial system and juice the U.S. economy.

The speech ? and growing evidence that the economy needed help ? ignited a 28-percent stock market rally over the next eight months. (The Fed actually began the purchases ? a policy known as quantitative easing, or QE2 ? in November 2010.)

On Friday morning, attention will again be riveted on Bernanke's annual speech. Never mind that most analysts don't expect him to offer significant new guidance about what the Fed might do next. Many think Bernanke wants more time to survey the economic landscape.

For one thing, the speech comes just a week before Bernanke will get to review the government's report on August unemployment and two weeks before he'll meet with the rest of the Fed's policy committee.

His speech might not please some investors who continue to hold out hope that Bernanke will signal that further help from the Fed is on the way.

Jackson Hole is used to hype, though. Even before it became where the Fed spent its late summers, it inspired tall tales. In 1895, a front-page report in The New York Times wrongly reported that the community's entire population had been wiped out in an American Indian attack.

Later came reports of a 10-foot eagle ?dubbed "Big Teton" ? that carried off two antelopes in its talons.

Alas, the bird has not been spotted since.

Naturalized U.S. Citizens Represent a Powerful Voting Bloc for ...

Unless you?ve been living in a bunker for the past few months, you may have noticed the hotly contested presidential campaign currently raging in the U.S. Democratic President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, a Republican, are currently locked in a statistical dead heat for the presidency, according to polling data aggregator Real Clear Politics. Just as in 2000, when Republican George W. Bush narrowly defeated Al Gore, pundits believe the election will be determined by razor-thin margins. It?s no surprise that both Obama and Romney are looking to sway these significant voting blocs ahead of the November election.

What role do legal immigrants play in the upcoming elections?
Legal immigrants represent a rich source of potential votes. Recent research suggests that registered naturalized immigrants vote at higher rates than native-born Americans. However, immigration reform remains a polarizing topic, and both Romney and Obama have had to adopt stances that sometimes alienate legal immigrants.

Although Obama won 67% of the Hispanic vote in 2008, according to the Pew Hispanic Center,
Republicans in battleground states like Nevada have branded him the ?deporter-in-chief.? Furthermore, while Obama?s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, ?potentially provides relief from deportation for eligible unauthorized immigrants ages 30 and under who arrived in the U.S. before age 16,? it falls far short of the comprehensive immigration reform he promised in 2008, as well as the DREAM Act, which would offer young illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

Romney took a hard-line stance on immigration reform during the 2012 primaries, according to a recent USA Today article. The Republican candidate, ?pushed identity-verification laws to keep illegal immigrants out of American jobs and endorsed the idea of ?self-deportation,? where laws make life so hard for illegal immigrants that they choose to return to their home countries.?

Reaching out to this voting segment
In recent weeks, both parties have created commercials in different languages hoping to reach and influence legal immigrant voters, but the Republicans have generally been outspent by Obama?s team. Reaching this key voting bloc could be easily accomplished through the effective use of resources. For example, deploying interpreters and translators would not only help Spanish voters, but also Chinese, Tagalog, Korean, Hindi, Punjabi, Japanese, and Russian speakers. This simple tactic would allow both parties to reach much wider audiences.

It should also be noted that many naturalized citizens are affected by the 180 bills introduced in state legislatures requiring voter identification and/or proof of citizenship in order to vote. The necessity of these bills is open to debate, but they clearly demonstrate the need for solid translation and interpretation.

Northwest Interpreters, Inc., as a language services company, supports the use of professional interpreters and translators for advertising aimed at multilingual voters, or voters who do not speak English as a first language. Naturalized citizens, as noted above, are motivated voters and take their civic responsibility seriously. NWI believes this voting constituency will only grow more crucial in the years to come.

Learn These Simple Easy Steps For Home Improvement - Typepad

A breakfast bar makes a charming and functional addition to your home. If your kitchen and den already run together, you can easily add one that will fit nicely into the open space that you enjoy. You can add a quaint breakfast bar with counter and chairs for around five hundred dollars.

If one loves water and swimming then getting their own pool may be just the home improvement thing for them. There are many options for different kinds of pools one can get for their home allowing a custom fit pool for one?s needs. A pool can be just the thing for home improvement.

Childproofing your home can have a lot of great long- term effects. Your child will grow up much healthier if you make sure that your home is safe from harmful gases and contaminating microscopic particles. Such steps to keep your child safe should begin with conception and not after your baby is born.

When it comes to home improvement, think twice about decorating the walls of your house in anything extreme such as a wild color or print. A potential buyer may get a bad impression by seeing a house decorated in a way that is distasteful to them. They may choose to look elsewhere, if they do not want to put in the work to redecorate.

In home improvements the kitchen usually makes up the foundation of the home. Putting in new wooden cabinets along with shiny new faucets and a marble countertop, can immediately add brightness to a room and make it such a much more enjoyable space. This will also make the house more desirable to others if you decide to sell.

If you are looking to recreate your dining room living space, you can sand down your old table and refinish it. While this is a lengthy task, a new finish can make an old table look like new again. If you do this, make sure you take your time so it looks great.

Most of the home improvements that you need done can be done on your own. Hiring a contractor is important if it is an extensive job that takes professional experience. Certain drywall jobs, simple plumbing repairs and interior painting can be done without professional experience. You can save a lot of money by simply doing the repairs yourself.

Store your paint cans upside down. A skin forms inside used cans of paint. When you open the can it?s a mess to remove. One solution is to put the used paint cans in your storage area upside down! That way when you turn the can over and open it, the skin is underneath the paint where it can?t cause a problem.

A great home improvement tip is to not let your ego get in the way when making renovations. Sometimes, a renovation you may have in mind does not need to be done because it could violate a particular building code, or it could even harm the value of your home.

Replace old and outdated sliding glass patio doors with french doors. The look is bold and modern, something that new buyers will really appreciate. It?s the kind of small touch that is quick, easy, and inexpensive but will give you the most bang for your hard earn buck.

When signing a contract with a contractor doing home improvements, look for a place of business for that contractor. A clear sign that something is not up to par with your contractor is when they only give you a phone number for a contact and not a brick and mortar building address. If a problem arises it is very easy for them to just change numbers and start shop elsewhere.

Home improvement has to incorporate research, skill, and detail. It is an activity that takes advantage of your property with the intent of making it better. Don?t be fooled by the simple goal, because it takes work. If you are willing to put in the effort and if you follow the tips, you can do it!

Lawyer says tennis referee was incapable of murder

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A professional tennis referee accused of beating her 80-year-old husband to death has had two knee replacements and a shoulder replacement and couldn't have carried out the killing, her lawyer wrote in a court filing.

Lois Ann Goodman also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, hearing loss and constant spinal pain that's controlled by an electronic device implanted in her spine and is awaiting another shoulder replacement, attorney Alison Triessl said in the filing late Monday.

"It is physically impossible for her to have done this," Triessl told The Associated Press in a phone interview Monday night.

Triessl asked the judge to reduce Goodman's $1 million bail to $100,000 or release her on electronic monitoring.

"Mrs. Goodman is not a danger to any person or the community," Triessl wrote in the motion.

Goodman and her husband, Alan, have three daughters and were nearing their 50th wedding anniversary when he was found dead on April 17 at the couple's condominium in the Woodland Hills neighborhood.

Authorities briefly accepted Lois Goodman's explanation that she returned home to find a blood-covered coffee mug and her husband lying in bed not breathing after most likely falling down the stairs.

Prosecutors now allege that Goodman bludgeoned her husband to death with a coffee cup that broke and then used the sharp handle to stab him. She was arrested last week in New York, where she was to serve as a line judge for this week's U.S. Open ? one of many high-profile tournaments she had worked since 1979.

Goodman agreed not to fight extradition and arrived back in California on Thursday. She has a bail hearing set for Wednesday.

Triessl wrote in Monday's filing that there was no chance Goodman would flee, noting that she doesn't have a passport and has lifelong ties to the San Fernando Valley where she was born, raised and went to school.

She noted that Goodman cooperated when police began investigating the death of her husband and submitted to three intensive interviews, driving herself to the police station when she was summoned.

"She arrived on time and was utterly forthcoming," Triessl said.

Given Goodman's cooperation, she denounced the Los Angeles Police Department's decision to wait until Goodman was in New York to arrest her. She said they could have asked her to turn herself in in California and she would have obliged.

Triessl gave the court 40 testimonial letters from other tennis umpires, neighbors, family and friends, lauding Goodman as a beloved friend, colleague, mother and grandmother who treated her husband like a king. Most who knew her referred to her by her nickname of "Lolo."

Legal Aspects of Your Business: Copyright, Trademarks, & Contracts ...

My least favorite part of running my business is doing the books. I understand the importance of doing them each month, but they always seem to get pushed down to the bottom of the to-do list. My most favorite part of running my business is educating creative entrepreneurs about their legal rights. For some of you, this is the part of running your business?that you keep pushing off. Just like I can?t put off my books forever, it?s a pretty sure bet that you will encounter legal issues at some point. And hopefully being on top of the basics will make that interaction much less painful.

To help you be a little more proactive about getting your business in legal shipshape, I?m going to be writing a series of posts dedicated to discussing some of the most common legal interactions creative businesses face. I will arm you with the tools and checklists to make this process less daunting. To start, I?m going to outline each of the main issues that you need to tackle: opening and running a business, copyright, trademark, and contracts. I?ll dive into each topic thoroughly in upcoming blog posts:

1. Opening and Running a Business

In this post, I will focus on a basic list of legal items that businesses need to open and run. Not all of the items on this list may be relevant to your business. For example, if you operate as a sole proprietor, you won?t need to prepare a partnership agreement, operating agreement, or articles of incorporation. Requirements also vary depending on the type of product you are making, so we will discuss what you might need to investigate to determine?if a specialized license is required for your business. For example, those of you creating garments in California might need to obtain a Garment Manufacturing Certificate.

2. Copyright

In most creative businesses, copyrights are the most valuable asset.?More importantly, understanding copyright law and your rights are critical to protecting this asset. In my Copyright post, I will help you develop a system to not only determine if you should be registering your work with the U.S. Copyright Office, but how to monitor the use of your work across the Internet. Finally, this post will give you resources to tackle the most cost-effective tool in the Internet copyright enforcement toolbox, the DMCA takedown notice.

3. Trademark

Most creative enterprises fail to understand the value that their brand holds. They think that trademark laws only apply to big companies like Coca-Cola or Apple. However, just like copyright, monitoring the use of your brand is very important. In my Trademark post, we?ll discuss how to select a name so that it has the strongest trademark protection, how to monitor the use of your brand, and finally, when it might be the time to make the leap to registering your trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

4. Contracts

My post on Contracts will cover one of the easiest ways to protect your creative empire: having a contract in place. I know that many of you squirm when you sign a contract. But contracts really just outline the terms of your relationship and define a process for what happens when things go wrong. For example, your contract should define what you are and are not providing or what happens when someone shoplifts a piece of jewelry from one of your consignment retailers.

Share with us below some of the legal items that you keep pushing to the bottom of your to-do list, so that I can hopefully give you the tools to make those tasks seem more manageable!

**I?m a lawyer so my insurance carrier likes me to use disclaimers. The information in this post is?made?available for educational purposes only, not to provide specific legal advice. I am not your attorney and this post is not a substitute for competent legal advice from a licensed attorney in your state.**

Indians top Yankees, snap 9-game skid

By TOM WITHERS

AP Sports Writer

updated 10:08 p.m. ET Aug. 25, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Streak Buster did it again.

Justin Masterson handled New York's power-packed lineup for 6 2-3 innings and Michael Brantley hit a three-run homer as the Cleveland Indians snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Yankees on Saturday night.

For the second time this month, Masterson (10-11) ended a long skid for the Indians, whose stunning second-half collapse has dropped them from playoff contention. On Aug. 8, Masterson beat Minnesota and stopped Cleveland's 11-game slide, one loss shy of the club record.

"He's our go-to guy whenever we're going through tough times," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He'll get us out of it. He's our guy."

Brantley homered in the first inning off Hiroki Kuroda (12-9), and the Indians, who were just 3 1/2 games out of first place on July 26, won for only the fifth time in 27 games.

Cleveland is 5-18 in August, a month that has felt like a year.

"It's been rough," said closer Chris Perez, who worked the ninth for his 33rd save. "I've never been through something like this. I was here in 2010, when we were pretty brutal - but we were brutal all year. To go from competing to all of a sudden three weeks later ... it was just a free-fall."

Masterson, roughed up by Oakland in his previous start, allowed one run and seven hits. He walked two, struck out six and worked his way out of a major mess in the sixth, when the Yankees loaded the bases with none out and were a hit away from either tying the game or taking the lead.

"It happens," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "Our guys had pretty good at-bats. We weren't able to get that big hit."

With the victory, the Indians avoided becoming the first team since the Kansas City Royals in 2006 to have two losing streaks of at least 10 games in the same season.

Vinnie Pestano replaced Masterson in the seventh, inheriting two runners with two outs. Pestano walked Robinson Cano to load the bases before breaking Mark Teixeira's bat on a popup.

Perez pitched a perfect ninth, striking out Derek Jeter for the final out.

The colorful closer punctuated the strikeout with a fist pump, and moments later, the Indians lined up in the infield to exchange high-fives and celebrate a rare win.

"It's nice to smile after the game. It's been a rough month, a very rough month," Acta said. "We're looking forward to turning things around and see some of our kids get out there and make some impact on the games we have left."

Despite their fifth loss in six road games, the AL East-leading Yankees remained 3 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay, which lost 4-2 to Oakland.

Kuroda gave up Brantley's homer in the first, but shut out Cleveland on just four hits over the next seven innings. It was his fifth career complete game and first loss when going all the way.

Masterson coasted through five innings, allowing just three hits and holding a 3-0 lead.

But the Yankees had him on the ropes in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with none out on two singles and a walk. Teixeira's sacrifice fly to deep center made it 3-1, and Masterson walked Curtis Granderson to refill the bases. However, Masterson got Eric Chavez on a liner to third and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo ran down Russell Martin's drive at the warning track.

As the ball left his bat, Martin thought it would clear Choo's head.

"I did at first, but the ball just died and he was there," Martin said. "I thought I struck it better than that, but obviously I didn't."

Masterson got the first two outs in the seventh, but gave up consecutive singles to Jeter and Nick Swisher. Acta pulled Masterson, who got a loud ovation from the crowd of 34,374 - nearly half of them Yankees fans - as he left the field. Fortunately for the Indians, this time their bullpen didn't let them down.

In their previous 22 losses, the Indians had the lead at some point in nine of them but their relievers blew some games in the late innings.

NOTES: Jeter has a .366 career average at Progressive Field - his highest at any ballpark. He went 2 for 5 and leads the majors with 173 hits. ... Girardi expects LHP Andy Pettitte to appear in another major league game this season. Pettitte has been on the disabled list with a broken left ankle since June 28. He threw in the outfield before the game and is scheduled to visit Dr. Chris Ahmad on Monday in New York. ... The Indians are optimistic 3B Lonnie Chisenhall will return before the season ends. He broke his right arm when he was hit by a pitch June 29 and underwent surgery. Acta said Chisenhall will take on-field batting practice Monday.

History of the Screenwriters' Workshop: 1987-2012 : Screenwriters ...

In 1987, screenwriters Brent Johnson and Susan Weisman developed the original idea for Screenwriters? Workshop. After working on a screenplay production project with local film professionals with the purpose of getting more film experience, Brent and Susan decided to establish a permanent organization that could continue to offer screenwriters similar collaborative experiences along with a variety of other learning opportunities. This was with the purpose of making the screenwriter and their script the focus of the creative process. Over the past twenty-five years, this vision has been pursued through the efforts of many individuals and the various programs of SWW.
The Screen Labs program produced shorts films from member scripts using the creative and production resources in the Twin Cities. Robb Mitchell served as ScreenLabs producer for several years and he and previous producers were able to bring the directors, actors and various film production personnel from the Twin Cities together to create some wonderful work. The current Script2Screen program carries on this production tradition using a three month long theme-based short screenplay contest to choose a winning script, which is then filmed.

Script readings have been a constant throughout SWW?s history. The current Script Night Reading Series, which has been held at the Jungle Theater the past two years, showcases member scripts. These readings have a director and professional actors. The 2nd Tuesday Reading Group, facilitated by Karen Frank, is a more informal script reading utilizing SWW members and MCTC students as actors in a table read format.

For many years, the Barry Morrow Fellowship was a feature-length contest, which gave the winner a meeting with Rainman writer, Barry Morrow. A feature-length script contest emerged again in 2011 with sponsorship from Thomson-Reuters, and will continue for the second year in 2012. Along with a cash prize, the 2011 contest winner, Larry Matthews, received a Script Night staged reading and a meeting with producer Judith James of Dreyfus-James Productions.

In the early days, ScreenLine was the newsletter that kept members updated on member news, writing tips and Minnesota film news. John Jansen was a long-time editor. Now the SWW website and e-mail are the sources of information for members.

SWW has had many well-known screenwriters and writing instructors speak to its membership over the years, such as local writers Jeffrey Hatcher and Judith Guest, as well as nationally known writers such as Barry Morrow, David Trottier, and Stephen McFeely.

And finally, SWW has fostered screenwriting groups. Three weekly Script Groups provide a forum for writers and fellow members to read script pages aloud and receive feedback. While there were private member groups in the early days and still are, SWW now sponsors three ongoing script groups which meet weekly throughout the year and are open to any member of any level.

SWW has had peaks and valleys throughout the years, but it continues to aid Minnesota screenwriters in improving their craft and creative development. The Screenwriters? Workshop has always been run by a small group of dedicated people and we are grateful to all of our current leaders as well as former leaders and founders. We also greatly appreciate the continued involvement and support of our members, without whom this organization would not exist. We would like to thank our current board members for their service ? Hafed Bouassida, Ed Leschke, Perry Lueders, and Trina Koning. We also express our gratitude to former board members for their service ? some of which include Robb Mitchell, Christopher Gegax, Chris Velasco, James McConnell, Brett Johnson, Julie Rappaport, and Cheryl Conway (apologies for an incomplete list). We hope to continue for many more years with the support of our members and the wider community.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Health Insurance: A Short Guide To ...

Many colleges and universities offer group health insurance policies, so if you aren?t covered under your parents? policy, this can be a great way to get relatively cheap insurance. Many alumni organizations offer group insurance to graduates, so you can use this to cover you after your graduate from school and before you get employer insurance.

Many consumers do not realize the importance staying healthy has, when applying for health insurance. Insurance companies obtain information from the Medical Information Bureau, a company which keeps track of all medical records. The MIB, as it is known in the insurance industry, has a record of all doctor visits, prescriptions and hospitalizations. When someone applies for health insurance, their premium is partially based on this medical history report.

Even if you think you don?t need it, it?s still not a good idea to go without health insurance. The money you save on premiums won?t go very far if you are struck by an unexpected illness or other medical emergency. These can wipe out your savings very quickly and lead to bankruptcy.

Check with the Medical Information Bureau to see if you have files with them. This is a central data base that contains medical information that is shared by the major medical insurance companies. You will be able to get a free copy from then through the internet. Knowing what is on there is going to help you in your health insurance search.

Avoid risks! If you must purchase your own health insurance policy, it is a good idea to live a healthy lifestyle and refrain from engaging in risky activities. Those who - do not smoke, drink to excess, and who maintain a healthy weight - can enjoy lower health insurance premiums. People who engage in risky behavior or hold jobs that are considered risky may not be able to get health insurance or their premiums may be higher.

Buy health insurance that cannot be canceled by the insurance provider. You never know how your health situation will change, either by illness or by a catastrophic event. Having health insurance that cannot be canceled will give you peace of mind that you will be covered for as long as you choose to be covered.

Check your insurance rates versus your deductible rates. If you have a low health insurance payment, you are very likely to have a high deductible cost. Alternately, a high health insurance payment will usually reflect as low deductibles. You have to decide when you want to pay, monthly, or per visit.

If you engage in dangerous hobbies or if your profession carries a level of risk, you may want to consider a change or be ready to pay more for your insurance. If your idea of a fun weekend is jumping out of planes, you?ll be paying more for your insurance policy than someone with two feet on the ground.

When having to choose between an HMO or a non-HMO plan, think about whether or not you want someone else deciding when you want to see a specialist. If you have a doctor you trust completely, you should be fine with waiting for a referral to see a specialist. If, however, you like being more in control, you might want to consider a non-HMO insurance option.

If your health is not very good or if you have young children, you should definitely subscribe to a health insurance. Many people do not have a health insurance or are not satisfied with the coverage that comes as a benefit of their job. You could save a lot of money on hospital bills and avoid stress in case of illness with a health insurance.

When applying for health insurance, it is very important that you are honest about your medical history on all of the questionnaires and paperwork. Double check your answers to make sure that everything is correct. One dishonest statement or accidental error can lead to a denial of your coverage or higher rates.

You should always keep in mind that a single visit to a hospital or a doctor can involve many separate procedures and tests. Your insurance company is not obligated to pay for an entire visit. When you have preparation time, double-check with your insurer to find out if any parts of your visit fall outside your insurance coverage.

When thinking about getting health insurance coverage, not many people think of test driving their prospective plan. This is called a free trial basis - you get your money back if you aren?t happy - as long as it is canceled within a set amount of time. Check to see if this is offered in your area!

When it comes to health insurance, you really need to research your own state. Insurance can differ state to state, so you want to make sure you understand what is available in your own area. Places like New York can be very pricey, while other states have a much lower cost.

Do not let your insurance policy lapse before you look and get new coverage. If your policy is going to be canceled due to unemployment, you can get help from the COBRA program that the government offers. This will help you keep ongoing coverage while you find a new job and avoid a lapse.

Remember that it?s important to get busy getting health insurance quotes today. Your safety and possibly, that of your family are at stake, so you must have a health insurance plan in place. There are many reliable, reputable insurance companies across the nation and information regarding the many plans they offer is readily available online. Don?t hesitate! Start getting health insurance quotes today to protect yourself and your family!

    Pompeii's final XXIV hours retweeted

An animation depicts the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on Aug. 24 in the year 79.

    By Alan Boyle

Exactly 1,933 years after Mount Vesuvius' eruption buried the Roman city of Pompeii and its residents in a lethal blanket of ash, the catastrophe is being recounted as it was back then ? only this time as a stream of tweets on Twitter.

The minute-by-minute reconstruction of Pompeii's destruction on Aug. 24 in the year 79 is based on the tale of Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar and admiral who took command of the city's evacuation. The last day of Pompeii will be retweeted as it happened, starting at 10 a.m. ET Friday, by @Elder_Pliny, a ghost who's being brought to life by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Why Denver? It's because the museum is due to host an exhibit about Pompeii titled "A Day in Pompeii," opening Sept. 14. The museum says it'll be offering an interactive map tracing Pliny's movements on that fateful day.

The old guy has already gotten a premonition of disaster: "The gods must be roaming the earth," he tweeted on Wednesday. "I felt the ground shake this morning."

Don't tell @Elder_Pliny, but the big day is not going to end well for him. In real life, his story had to be told by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who provided pretty much the only eyewitness account of what happened. In his letters to Tacitus, the younger Pliny describes how his uncle sailed into the chaos:

"Ash was falling onto the ships now, darker and denser the closer they went. Now it was bits of pumice, and rocks that were?blackened and burned and shattered by the fire. Now the sea is shoal; debris from the mountain blocks the shore. He paused?for a moment wondering whether to turn back as the helmsman urged him. 'Fortune helps the brave,' he said. ..."

If @Elder_Pliny's tweets are even half as gripping, they'll be a must-read for Follow Friday.??

After the eruption and ashfall, the city was abandoned and largely forgotten. Centuries later, the archaeological excavation of the city revealed a freeze-frame of everyday life for first-century Romans, from their brothels and trash heaps to their high-class homes. Pompeii has fallen on another round of hard times recently, due to modern-day deterioration?? but the site still ranks as one of the archaeological wonders of the world. Here are more of the recent revelations from Pompeii:

You can take a virtual tour of Pompeii's present-day ruins using Google Street View, and PublicVR has been working on a three-dimensional virtual reconstruction of the city's theater district as it was during its ancient heyday. If you can't make it to Denver for "A Day in Pompeii," there's also a?"Last Days of Pompeii" exhibit opening next month at the Getty Villa in Malibu, Calif.

With the Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung brings a stylus to the iPad fight

With the Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung brings a stylus to the iPad fight

Samsung has released a new iPad-sized tablet and, of course, our Mobile Nations sibling site Android Central has a complete Galaxy Tab 10.1 review ready and waiting for you. Will it give Apple a run for their money in the large-form tablet space? Sadly, doesn't look like it. Here's Anndrew Vacca's bottom line:

The Galaxy Note 10.1 is unique and stands out among a seemingly endless sea of competitors, though not always in a good way. Samsung has stepped back and reshaped its tablet strategy, now focusing on user experience rather than specs alone, and if you keep an open mind about the included S Pen, you just might find it more handy than you would have imagined. However, we believe the $500 you'll spend on a base Note 10.1 would be better spent on two Nexus 7s. However, if you've got your heart set on a full-sized tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is the way to go if you want to keep from breaking the bank.

I've used Wacom tablets for years. When I did design in enterprise software, it was the only sane way to navigate Photoshop and Illustrator on two really large monitors. I like Wacom's technology very much. I haven't had a chance to try the Galaxy Note 10.1 myself yet, but I hope, if nothing else, they've nailed the Wacom experience.

However, nailing the Wacom experience isn't going to do diddly squat against the iPad. They need to nail the tablet experience, and unfortunately it doesn't sound like they've done that. I've been using a Nexus 7 constantly for about a month now, and even that doesn't come anywhere close to the experience of an iPad, so if Samsung isn't even matching the Nexus 7, that's a big problem.

The S Pen-touting Galaxy Note 10.1 will be both a blessing and a curse for Samsung. On one hand, Samsung has created a device that stands out amongst its competitors with unique features and a truly different user experience. In the same breath, the S Pen is sure to scare away folks who balk at the idea of reverting back to a stylus. I?m here to say that love or hate the S Pen, the Galaxy Note 10.1 just may be the best 10-inch Android tablet on the market today.

And if that's truly the case, that's a bigger problem for Google and for Android.

Apple owns the 10-inch tablet market right now. Owns it in a way a market hasn't been owned since Windows began its ascent in the early 90s. Apple will probably never get to 90+% (which is a very good thing -- we want lots of competition), but when the iPad mini launches this fall, they'll likely grab a huge percentage of the 7- to 8-inch tablet market as well. Especially if the Nexus 7 is the best even Google can manage. (The iPad mini won't be a big iPod touch like the Nexus 7, it'll be a small iPad, with all the software implications that involves).

Samsung has been incredibly successful battling Apple on the phone front. They, or someone, needs to bring that same pressure to Apple on the tablet front. And soon please.

In the meantime, go read the entirety of Andrew's Galaxy Note 10.1 review over at AC, then come back and let me know what you think. What will it take to get a real iPad competitor to market?
